Question 1

What is a Digital Product Passport?

Accepted Answer

A Digital Product Passport is a structured record of a product's identity, materials, compliance, repairability and end-of-life handling, reached by scanning a data carrier such as a QR code on the product. It is required under the EU Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation and, for batteries, the EU Battery Regulation.

Question 2

When do Digital Product Passports become mandatory?

Accepted Answer

Batteries first: LMT, industrial and EV batteries above 2 kWh need a passport from 18 February 2027. Textiles, electronics, furniture, iron and steel and other priority groups follow through delegated acts expected from 2027 onwards, each typically with an 18-month transition.

Question 3

Does a UK business need a Digital Product Passport?

Accepted Answer

If you place products on the EU market, yes — the obligation follows the market, not where the company is based. A UK manufacturer or importer selling into the EU is in scope for the relevant product group from its applicable date.
